Students whine about not having to work

That’s it. It’s official. Today is most-likely my final day of sanity.

It’s my fault, though. I shouldn’t have tried to do something nice.

Sure, my Western Plains High School journalism students finished the first issue of the brand-new school newspaper, Western Plains Cat Tracks, on Friday, but that shouldn’t be cause for any celebration, right?

No. Of course not. Why would they want to watch a movie instead of working? Silly me for even thinking such crazy thoughts . . .

I just can’t believe these students were whining about having to watch a movie. Sure, it is an educational movie about pioneering female journalist Nellie Bly, but since when is watching a movie worse than doing actual work?

Back in my day, I loved watching movies. I didn’t care what they were about because only one thing mattered to me: a movie meant we weren’t going to do work.

Nowadays, when an increasing numbers of the students I work with are so apathetic about life I’m surprised they actually get themselves dressed in the mornings, movies aren’t a nice reprieve from class work.

It’s insanity!

I mean, the students I teach can be a very lazy bunch, just like every group of high school students on this planet, so one would think a movie would be right up their alley because they can just sit in their chairs and stare blankly at the television screen.

But no! They decided to whine and complain the whole hour.

Why do I even try to vary things? From here on out, I’m just going to give them busy work as a reward for getting something done.

I’m ready for Friday already. Darn kids.
